Practices & Principles
Prayer is not a technique to master but a relationship to enter. It is honest conversation with a God who is already listening, and it takes many forms, because you are not always in the same place when you come to Him.
Common Misconception
Prayer is only about asking God for things
Biblical Reality
Prayer is being with God. Honestly, fully, and often.
Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication
Classic devotional model · Philippians 4:6
A simple, balanced framework that walks you through four movements: praising God for who He is, confessing where you've fallen short, thanking Him for what He's done, and bringing your needs before Him.
The Pattern Jesus Gave
Jesus' teaching to His disciples · Matthew 6:9-13
It is the only prayer Jesus explicitly taught His followers, given when the disciples asked Him how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13, Luke 11:1-4). The petitions trace a complete arc of relationship with God: worship, surrender, daily dependence, forgiveness, and protection. A framework to shape your praying, not a formula to recite mechanically.
Standing in the Gap
Biblical tradition · 1 Timothy 2:1
Praying on behalf of others: friends, family, leaders, the suffering, and even enemies. Intercession shifts the focus from your own needs to bearing the burdens of others before God.
Honest Grief Before God
The Psalms and the Prophets · Psalm 13:1-2
Nearly a third of the Psalms are laments. These are not faithless complaints but faith-filled honesty, bringing your pain, confusion, and anger to God rather than hiding it from Him.
Returning to God
Historic Christian practice · 1 John 1:9
Confession is not groveling. It is agreeing with God about what He already knows and receiving the forgiveness already purchased. It clears the air between you and God so that prayer flows freely again.
Need Help Finding Words?
Sometimes you know what you carry but can't articulate it. Describe what's on your heart and receive a Scripture-grounded prayer you can refine until it sounds like your own voice. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness." — Romans 8:26
Honesty over eloquence
God already knows your heart. He's not grading your grammar. He wants your honesty.
Scripture-grounded
The Bible is full of prayers. When you don't know what to say, pray what's already written.
Persistence
Jesus told parables about knocking until the door opens (Luke 18:1-8). Don't give up.
Listening, not just talking
Prayer is a conversation. Leave space for silence and pay attention to what rises.
In Jesus' name
Not a magic formula. It means praying in alignment with who Jesus is and what He wants.
Any time, any place
Formal prayer times matter, but so does talking to God while you drive, walk, or wait.
Five steps. No special training required. Just you and God.
Show Up
Set aside even five minutes. Close the door, silence your phone, and be present.
Be Honest
Tell God exactly where you are: grateful, angry, confused, desperate, or numb.
Use Scripture
Open to a Psalm or a passage and let God's words become your words.
Ask
Bring your needs and the needs of others before Him simply and specifically.
Listen
Sit quietly for a moment. You may not hear a voice, but pay attention to what stirs.
